Frequently asked questions

What you deserve to know first.

Paratia is a domain-name filter, and it has clear limits. They are written here alongside everything else, not at the bottom of a terms page.

How it works

What is Paratia?

A local DNS filter for Android. It shows which services your installed apps are talking to and lets you stop trackers, ads and unwanted connections. You choose which apps to protect, one by one.

Everything is processed on the device: your traffic is never sent to Paratia's servers.

Does it need root?

No. Paratia uses the local VPN service Android offers to applications. It requires no root permissions, it does not modify the system and it installs no modules.

Why does Paratia ask for the VPN permission?

Android asks for VPN consent because that is the mechanism by which an app can see traffic. Paratia's «VPN» is local: there is no remote server, and your traffic never leaves the phone to travel somewhere else. It only routes DNS requests past the filter.

Only DNS requests travel through the tunnel: the rest of your traffic is not read, copied or slowed down.

Can I use Paratia alongside another VPN?

No, and that is not Paratia's decision: Android has a single VPN slot and one application occupies it at a time. Turning Paratia on switches the other VPN off, and the other way around.

Does it slow down browsing or drain the battery?

Only what is headed for a DNS server is routed into the tunnel. Your data traffic never enters the process: it is not read, not copied, and does not travel anywhere different than before.

Allowed DNS requests carry on to the same server they would have reached without Paratia — your network's.

What it blocks, and what it doesn't.

How does Paratia decide what to block?

It compares the requested domain name against public lists of badly-behaved domains — tracking, advertising, malware servers — maintained by independent projects: StevenBlack, AdGuard, Peter Lowe, URLhaus, Dandelion Sprout.

What those lists contain is not decided by us and can change. If a legitimate domain ends up blocked, you can allow it from the app.

How often are the lists updated?

Once a day, when there is network and enough battery, without interrupting protection.

A response that does not contain enough valid lines is discarded before it touches the disk: an error page or a public wi-fi captive portal must not be allowed to replace a working list with nothing.

What can Paratia not block?

It is a domain-name filter, and its limits follow from that:

  • ads that have already been downloaded, and ads served from the app's own domain — no name filter can separate those from the content;
  • apps that ship their own DNS resolver: they never reach the filter;
  • connections to IP addresses written directly into the app, because there is no DNS request to intercept;
  • anything at all, if another VPN occupies the system slot.
Is Paratia an antivirus?

No, and it is worth knowing up front. Paratia does not inspect traffic: only DNS requests travel through the tunnel, everything else is inside TLS.

It does not open your apps' encrypted connections and does not put itself in the middle, so it leaves untouched the checks apps perform on the server's certificate.

Can an app stop working if I block a domain?

Yes. Blocking a domain can make an app that expects it misbehave. The log shows which domain was stopped and when, so you can create an exception.

Being a filter, Paratia cannot guarantee that every application keeps working exactly as before.

Why do I no longer get rewards from ads in games?

If a rewarded ad is blocked, the in-game reward does not arrive. That is the intended behaviour, not a defect: Paratia does not fake ad views, does not generate false confirmations and does not alter what applications do internally.

If you need that reward, the exception is created from the log.

Privacy

Does Paratia collect my data?

No. The request log, the statistics, the rules you create and the list of protected apps are written to a local database and are never copied, synced or sent anywhere.

There is no account, no analytics, no crash reporting, no telemetry, no advertising identifier and no remote history. No NOVACODE server is involved in running the app.

What actually leaves the phone?

Two things only, both needed to make it work:

  • the allowed DNS requests, which go to the same server they would have gone to without Paratia — your network's, which Paratia does not divert to itself;
  • the blocklist downloads from independent public projects: plain file requests, with no identifiers.
Do I need an account to use Paratia?

No. There is no sign-up, no sign-in and no profile to create. You install the app and it works.

What happens to my data if I uninstall the app?

It goes with it: all of it was on the phone. You can also clear it beforehand, from the app, with «Clear the log».

What about my rights over personal data?

European regulation gives you the right to access, rectify and erase personal data. In Paratia's case there is nothing to exercise against us, because we hold no data about you. The data on the device is cleared by you.

Editions and purchase

What is the difference between Paratia Free and Paratia Pro?

Paratia Free is free with no time limit: it protects up to 3 apps, with essential protection and statistics. Paratia Pro removes the cap on the number of apps and adds advanced controls and the full log.

The filter is the same: the free version is not an expiring trial.

How much does Paratia Pro cost?

It is bought once, with no subscription. The price is shown inside the app, already in your currency: we do not print it here because the store sets it per country.

Do I lose Paratia Pro if I change phone?

No. In the version distributed by Google Play the purchase stays tied to the Google account it was made with, and is restored by signing in with that account. Refunds and restores follow Google Play's terms.

Is there a version for iPhone?

No. Paratia today is Android only, and it is in beta. The interface is available in Italian and English.
